Facebook and Headhunter

I have finally succumbed to Facebook. Registered about a week ago and I'm addicted. At first I thought it is just another networking tool like friendster (ok but more for youngsters) but then once I'm in it I realize that it is not that bad. Found a few friends whom I have not been in contact with for quite a while.

Anyway, now that I have explored the many wonderful applications in Facebook, life is back to normal. .. :)

In my earlier posting, farewell friends, I mentioned briefly about what's happening at the company where I'm attached to. Well, things are still the same and more and more of the 'old' staff are feeling somewhat demotivated. Many do not dare to voice out their feelings for fear of being transferred or put in cold storage. It happened to me and a few others and I know it can happen to so many others who dare to 'go against the flow'. Well, in my case it was not really against the flow, but more of questioning why it flows this way instead of that way.

A few of my friends left and I know more will be leaving too, if the opportunity knocks on their door.

Anyway, something wonderful happened to me last Thursday. I received a call from a Headhunter asking for my resume. It seems that they are looking for somebody to handle a portfolio that I'm quite familiar with and somebody recommended me.

It took me quite a while to get my resume done (gosh! have not updated it for more than 5 years). Sent the resume and now waiting for the results. Regardless whether I get the job or not, but I still feel good because somewhere out there, people still value my capabilities. They still know what I can do and have the confidence that I can do it well. It may sound pathetic but the fact is, that phone call really makes me happy. It's not so much because of the prospect of having a chance to get a new job but it is more of the fact that I still have my worth. That phone call somehow reassured me that I still have my value.

To be honest, even though I am not happy working here at the moment, but if given a choice, I do not want to leave. As I mentioned before, I don't mind getting old with the company. I have been here since it was still an infant with less than 50 people... about 9 years ago, and I don't mind going for another 9 or more years.

If the pay is better, the prospects for promotion are better, why not move eh.

Sounds like you are in a rut in your current job. You've become "comfortable" with it! :-)

Guess what.. The same thing happened to my company these few days. The old guards retired and took over by the new team. Few people were asked to leave, and few of them were relocated to other subsidiaries.

Many of them are toying with an idea of resigning, including me. Things are getting worst lately, when good people were transferred, but awful people get promoted.

It is not a matter of merit anymore but more of which group that you belong to....

If you are offered by the headhunter, go for it girl! Sometimes we could not be too nostalgic about a company which does not feel nostalgic to us anymore. Life is too short, dont waste that opportunity..!

trueblue,
If you are confident about your own capability, my advice is go for it. At the way the flow is going, you soon will be targeted for transfer as you are not one of them whatever your contributions to the company from its inception and whatever your capability is.
At the new place you will be able to prove your worth and show results. Demand whatever you think you deserve and if they think you are good enough, that will pay you what you ask.

Hi Puteri,

Yup, you are right. I'm in my comfort zone. I know almost everbody and almost every history of the company. the thought of starting new is something that always end with a sigh.

But then, if I get a good offer somewhere, why not.. :)

Mcbudu,

Oh my.. u too? Isn't that sad? But, I guess this is what we call life. It's not always smooth sailing.

Maybe it's time for you to start looking for greener pastures somewhere too. As much as I try not to, I think that is the best move that I should take. Now that my resume is done.. I can start scouting around.. :)

I've prepared my resume only recently after "serving" the current place for 13 years. It's just too bad coz some people see me as a treat to them just because I've completed my MBA.....and the worst part they partly cold storage me for no reason.

opps........i meant threat not treat.

Hi Pak Zawi,

By the way, it's Nana, not trueblue :),

I have already been transferred, almost 3 months ago. There was no discussion whether I would be willing to or not. I was not given the opportunity. The VP (by the way, she's new) just instructed me to report to another department on such and such date.

The sad thing is, I was in HR department previously. Most of the time I know what's going on. but in my case.. I was not informed.. but somehow I could sense it.

As somebody mentioned in her blog (I hope you don't mind I'm quoting you here ayu): "Dismantle the HR department and purposely leave it without any manager and in the hands of incompetent people until you find someone who is loyal to you and only you. You need this department to freely appoint and transfer employees. Preferably, leave the post vacant for as long as you can and turn it into the most disorganized and hated department of all."

Hi NaNa,

I think I agree with Puteri. If the day to day atmosphere is not lifting your spirits, I think if there's something exciting out there..grab it. What have you got to loose. You have the talent and skill and you are still young. Have a go and enjoy the new experience. But hey..only you know which way is best. Just my thoughts.

Come visit my blog and see how kids can recharge us. Be a kid again and jump for any new adventure..ha ha.

Hi anon,

Thanks for the visit.

I guess this is the common scenario almost everywhere. Once you have added advantage, you are seen as a threat.

Go for it. If you are needed more elsewhere, then why not. That's what I'm going to do too. :)

Hi Ruby,

Now that I have my resume updated, there's no harm in trying.. :)

Thanks for the words of encouragement. As mcbudu said, we could not be too nostalgic about a company which does not feel nostalgic to us anymore.

Hi Nana, I'm confident you will get back on your feet again soon, this time with more challenges and better future.
When young, I couldn't wait to reach for the stars and took no prisoners so to speak, working sometimes 7 day weeks, never taken vacations but always with the ambition to be somebody.
But, was it worth it? Yes and no. I did pay some big prices as well sacrifices and personal losses too.
I did not have time to smell the flowers...
Yes, I did reach not the stars, but the moon, but paid a heavy price for it.
Today, I am retired and smelling the flowers as well holding my wife's hand everyday. She stood by her man even though she hardly saw me home those days. Today I give her every minute.
Nana, whatever it is, remember to stop to smell the flowers.
Good luck and my very best regards to you, UL.

U. Lee,

Thanks for dropping by and for the encouraging words.

Yes, I'm hoping that something good will come out of all this. If it is better for me to get out and start new somewhere else, then, that is what i should aim for.

nana,
A thousand apologies for the wrong name. You will have to forgive this almost senile old man for calling you with another's name. A revisit and seeing your reply brought me to the realization of the horrible mistake. Please allow this old man to kneel down and beg for your forgiveness for making such a silly mistake. I am sure glad you took it with a smile.
Anyway my statement stays. If you are good, people will value you for the real you. It is a matter of time.
Another round of apology from me.

Dear Nana,

You know I think highly of people of are head-hunted for a job. It reflects that your expetise in your chosen field is immeasurable.

Of course, it is also a boost to your confidence which can be running low if you stay at one place for a long time.

Congratulations anyway...

NaNa said...

Pak Zawi,

Don't worry about that. I know it was unintentional.

Anyway, you are still not that old... as you said, you are 57 years young!

NaNa said...

Hi Elviza,

Thanks for the kind words.

The fact that somebody out there think I'm worth considering surely boosts my confidence and self worth.... regardless whether I the job suits me or not.

Hi Anon and U. Lee,

Thanks for the explanation. I call it kueh ketayap.

NaNa said...

Hi Idham,

It used to be like that. I used to like my job and I don't mind staying with the company even though I can get much better offer somewhere else. But now things don't look that good. Sometimes I don't feel motivated to work. Hope it will get better because, as I said, I don't mind growing old with this company.
